Opening reception for “How the Hell Did I Get Here?” Multi-Media Paintings by Jason Jacobson. Exhibit runs from September 21–November 14. Artist’s Statement I create multi-scale, mixed media paintings that convey a wide range of emotions and subjects. My art is very much a giant journal page, each one conveying a particular moment of self reflection, social issue, or current mood. One minute I may be battling the idea of my own mortality, and the next I’m knee deep in the awe of creating a unique texture or process. Being brought up as a Gen-X kid in the Midwest… has an effect on a person. It shapes all areas of mental health, self awareness, and social outlook. I’m grateful for my generational timeline, as it had helped drive me to create at the highest level possible, while maintaining the mission of “progress over perfection.” My goal is pretty simple… I can’t be alone in this mess. Self reflection, self understanding, and a bit of realization around our place in this world are how we all begin to heal, understand one another, save space for other opinions, and thrive. Within all my work, that is the only real message I have. “This is what I’m going through right now. You may or may not share the same moment, mood, or opinion…. but, is it not something we all can experience?” Artist’s Bio Jason Jacobson (1973) is a Midwestern-born artist living in Cottonwood Heights, UT. He is compelled to use his visual voice for the purpose of reflecting modern society and express the freedom of self expression through art. Through his midwestern upbringing (and being the typical Gen-X’er), he has been affected by 40+ years of social culture input, life input, and addressing his own internal resistance. His art is less about style & grace, but more about emotion, mood, and at times confrontation. While working largely in the Abstract and Abstract Realism realms, Jason’s work varies in stylistic choice. With subjects often times covering inner self reflection, modern society, fear, loss, and dreaming. He is definitely a mixed media artist with a wide range of media processes. As a graphic artist, he has nearly 30 years of industry experience. This experience in retail advertising, retail marketing, and various print medium applications has only benefitted him in expression of his visual voice. These years of experience have cemented vital qualities that apply across all art fields. Concepts like symmetry, composition, color theory, layout, process, and many others all play a part of his approach to his body of works.
