Lecture followed by plenty of audience Q & A. Katherine Kitterman is the state scholar for the Utah tour of “Voices & Votes.” Utah has a unique history of democratic participation and voting rights. From pioneering efforts for women’s suffrage, to long restrictions on Native Americans’ voting rights, to ongoing debates over vote-by-mail, Utah has demonstrated the complicated push and pull between expanding and contracting political participation. This event accompanies “Voices & Votes: Democracy in America,” a Smithsonian exhibition that explores the action, reaction, vision, and revision that democracy demands as Americans continue to question how to shape our country. “Voices & Votes” is made possible in Utah by Utah Humanities and local venues around the state. Voices & Votes is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and State Humanities Councils nationwide. It is based on an exhibition by the National Museum of American History. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.
